When Jeffrey Zeldman was asked to define web design, he answered:
“Web design is the creation of digital environments that facilitate and encourage human activity; reflect or adapt to individual voices and content; and change gracefully over time while always retaining their identity.”
These are beautiful words, don’t you think so? They are also difficult words that won’t help you to understand web design nor develop the corresponding skills (wikipedia’s definition is even worse).
Thus it’s important to start by giving a definition that works i.e. a definition which will help you to be a great web designer.

Web Design Project Preparation is all about gathering, understanding and using information effectively. I had written this article’s initial introduction, but then I found this awesome, if not perfect quotation from Paul Boag:
Whatever [your methodology] is like, make sure to include a big section on ‘information gathering’. So we’re talking about things like; success criteria, business objectives, competitive analysis, priorities, mood boards, user personas and user expectations. The reason why this information is so important is not only so that you can deliver a better solution but it’s immensely important when it comes to justifying why you have done something a certain way.
